Setting:The setting of the book takes place at a boarding school in Alabama. The exact year that it takes place isn’t mentioned; however I’m confident that it takes place during our present life. Throughout the whole story, the setting stays in the same place. Point of View:This story is a first person point-of -view through the whole story. We see the story through the eyes of Miles Halter. He is fifteen years old and the novel’s protagonist.
Plot:The story starts out very slow in my opinion. John Green takes his time in introducing all of the main characters. The main character, Miles Halter isn’t very good at making friends at his current school located in Florida. This leads his parents to send him to a boarding school in Alabama. From there on out, he makes new friends and causes occasional mischief. The plot doesn’t pick up until part two, which is called After.
Characters:
Miles
(protagonist)
He is very skinny overall and a bright kid for his age. He loves to remember famous last words.
Chip
(protagonist)
He is Miles roommate, and has a knack for getting in trouble.
Alaska
(protagonist)
She is a very attractive girl whom Miles slowly falls for, but she has a dark past that she shares with no one.
Takumi
(minor character)
He hardly plays an importance in the plot, but he has his moments here and there. He is very smart and loves to rap.
Conflicts:There are many internal conflicts in this story. All of them occur with Miles Halter. Many of these deal with his new friends. They love to pull pranks and do illegal things on campus grounds. Miles has to decide what to do; either he helps his friends pull off pranks and have fun with them, or not get expelled off of the school grounds. He of course decides to do what he thinks is the most fun, to have harmless behavior with harmless consequences. There really are no external conflicts, besides Miles trying to avoid being caught by teachers while doing pranks and illegal things on school grounds. It really isn’t resolved since they continue to do all of these throughout the whole story.
Theme:The theme was very hard to find in my opinion. Throughout the story though, it reveals itself. Miles has no friends at first, so he doesn't see the true value of them. When he gets moved to the boarding school in Alabama, he makes new friends. As the story goes, it develops strong bonds with them. Then something terrible happens, and Miles soon discovers how hard it can be to lose something you care for. So the theme finally reveals itself at the very end of the book. You never know how much something means to you until you lose it forever. Need Help? How To Deal With a Friend's Death- gives many great tips on how to deal with the loss of a loved one. Helping Yourself and Others Deal With Death-shows you ways to help yourself and others when dealing with death. Looking For Alaska- this is a very good review of the book overall and helps break it up for easy understanding.
